The Minimum Wages Act, 1948


The Minimum Wages Act was passed with object as more concisely and precisely stated in the preamble of the Act. In other words, this Act has been passed to provide for fixing minimum rates of wages in certain employments and the provisions of the Act are intended to achieve the object of doing social justice to the workers employed in the scheduled employments by prescribing minimum rates of wages for them. 

 

In brief, the Act purports to achieve to prevent exploitation of labour and for that purpose the authorities under the Act have been empowered to take steps to prescribe minimum rates of wages in the scheduled industries.
